Salerno: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Well, it's almost time to say goodbye to Italy (add a few days in Rome beginning Saturday), and what a ride it has been. Other than a few quick pictures I might post of our time in Rome, this is the last Italy post. Six weeks. Wow. Back to reality soon, though.

The Good

Salerno gave us quite a few surprises, some of which were pretty good:

Some of the best-preserved Greek ruins (yes, Greek: Salerno Ruins) in the world:

A magical candy store and Christmas store:

And Conan finishing his (second) submission of Boethius, a celebratory beer the size of his head, and some pretty scenic walks:

The Bad

Okay, not much was bad about Salerno....just different. The worst part was the park. Check out this Google Maps link of the park: Mercatello Park. Looks great, right? And when you're traveling the world with an active 11-year old, you look for parks. The reality of this park, though, is a different story.

A walk through our very close but inaccessible park:

The Ugly

Okay, I hate to highlight the negative, but Salerno was definitely different than Reggio Emilia. As I explained in my last post, it's a bit unkempt and there is the most dog shit we have ever seen. Really. It's in the metro station, on the sidewalks, in the parks, on the roads, and in our hearts. Hehe.

Let's play a game--how many piles of dog crap can you spot?

Or, would you like to come along on a scenic walk around our neighborhood?

Well, all kidding aside, we did have some good times here and ate the best pizza we've had yet. Thanks for following along with us. See you in Kenya!

  1. The ruins look amazing!! The park.. how disappointing but maybe it’s that way to keep the dog people out ?? How very strange that they allow that to take over their city😩
Looks you guys managed a good time overall..onto your next destination!!

    1. Oh, no...they're is plenty of dog crap in there, too. It is surprising given it's the beginning of the Amalfi coast and is super popular in the summer!

  2. Hello Griffin family. So glad you are embracing each adventure: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Yuck that park is a good example. Where in Kenya are you going? Watch out in Nairobi! I am assuming you are doing the game parks. Keep Rwanda on your radar.

    1. Hey, Sheila! We are spending a bit of time in Nairobi, volunteering and teaching kids. Why do you say watch out in Nairobi? I'm curious, especially given you know this area well. Not sure Rwanda is going to happen this trip--we fly out of Tanzania in 5 weeks to Bangkok, so we'll have to go next time!!

  3. Glad you are giving yourself lots of time in Tanzania. We stayed briefly in Nairobi when we were on a group tour. All the hotels have armed guards outside them. The city is big and there is crime. Getting out of the city and taking in the beautiful landscape is the way to go. Will your volunteer organization provide housing in Nairobi? Bangkok is the same ...very crowded and overwhelming. You are all so adventurous. Embrace it all!

    1. Ah, I see. Yeah, we'll be staying in the housing provided...providing it suits our needs. We learned we have to stay strong to what we need as a family in order to last this year. We've been to Bangkok, so we're prepared for that. Fingers crossed--I'm sure it will be fine!!
